Box and label it right
- Use strong boxes. Put heavy things like books in small boxes so they can be lifted, and light things like cushions in big ones.
- Fill the gaps with paper or cloth so nothing shakes. Close boxes so the lid does not bulge.
- Write the room and what is inside on each box, and mark 'fragile' and 'this side up' where needed.
- Keep valuables, documents, jewellery, medicines and chargers with you in a bag. Don't send them in the truck.
Fragile and bulky items
- Glass and crockery: wrap each piece separately in paper or cloth, plates standing on their edge rather than lying flat.
- TV and monitors: use the original box if you still have it, or pad all sides, and carry the TV upright, never flat.
- Fridge, washing machine and AC: ask your manual or the team how to move them. A fridge usually should stay upright, and may need to stand for some time before being switched on at the new place, so check the manual. Machines and gas appliances should be disconnected by a trained person.
- Mattresses and sofas: cover them with plastic or a clean sheet against dust, mud and rain. Take beds and wardrobes apart if they are meant to come apart, and keep screws together in a labelled bag.
On moving day
- Point out the fragile boxes and heavy items to the team before they start.
- Walk through each room before the truck leaves, and check each room again at the new house when the boxes arrive.
- Don't lift heavy furniture or appliances yourself or with untrained helpers, especially on stairs. Leave it to the team and keep children and old people away.
- Report any damage on the day, with a photo, instead of after some days.
