How to choose a shifting company and avoid surprises

What to ask a shifting team, what a clear quote lists, and warning signs before you hand over your things.

Ask these questions

  • Will you come and see the goods and the stairs before giving a price? A phone price without seeing the house is only a guess.
  • Which vehicle will come, and how many workers? Does the price include packing material, unloading and refitting?
  • What happens if something is broken or lost? Ask in advance and get their answer in writing.
  • Will the same team that came for the survey do the move? Who is the person in charge on the day, and what is their phone number?

A clear quotation

A good quotation is written or sent by message. It lists the date and time, the vehicle, the number of workers, what is included (packing, loading, unloading, fitting), what costs extra (for example waiting, long carries or extra floors), and the total. Our guide on shifting costs shows what changes the price. Compare at least two quotations like for like. A price that is far lower than the others often leaves something out.

Warning signs

  • They refuse to give any price in writing, or the price keeps changing.
  • They ask for the full payment before the move starts. A small booking amount can be fair, but agree what it covers and get a receipt.
  • They show up with a different vehicle or fewer workers than agreed, and demand more money at your door or on the road.
  • They have no phone number, address or way to reach them after the move.
